  • Anecdote
"Walter B. Maddox was born June 6, 1877 in Meriwether County, Georgia. The move the family made to Arkansas stands out in his memory. The trip was made by train and young Walter liked to watch the firemen load the wood that was stacked along the tracks to fire the engines. When they crossed the Mississippi River the cars were put on a ferry boat and transferred to the Arkansas side of the river. There another engine hooked onto them and brought them to Kensett where they were met by his great-uncle John Maddox, a Methodist Preacher and a brother who had come to Arkansas earlier. It took all day to make the trip by wagon from Kensett to Rose Bud a distance of twenty-two miles. My father bought the first cook stove I had even seen and the Thomas Maddox family was really uptown. His mother, the former Mary Frances Girard, was a patient Christian woman and it is remembered by her children that she sang as she went about her household chores"
