Joseph Whitener was originally buried in the Davidson-Bates private cemetery (Beaverdam Twp., Cherokee County, NC [35.120412, -84.114497]). In 1938, he was reinterred by the TVA (in preparation for the Hiawasse Dam Project) in the Ogreeta Baptist Church Cemetery near Murphy, NC. The TVA documents list his birth and death dates as 1847 and 1920 respectively. The documents also list "BRDZ" as cause of death.
